The San Francisco 49ers‘ primary concern with the start of the 2023 NFL season only a few months away is the quarterback position and which player they’ll have under center come Week 1.

With a promising update about Brock Purdy’s status this week, it seems that head coach Kyle Shanahan will have the guy he wants under center to start the 2023 campaign, but it is not set in stone that the second-year quarterback will be ready to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10.

As for Trey Lance, who could end up being the second or third quarterback on the depth chart, a new throwing motion has emerged via Anthony Flores of NBC Bay Area, which could be a concerning sign of how things are going for the former first-round draft pick.

An NFL quarterback changing his throwing motion at this point in his career is a bit of a red flag, as it shows a lack of confidence in his old motion and perhaps a sign that the team isn’t thrilled with his progress up to this point.

However, it could also unleash his talent and, as a result, take him to the next level, making him a legitimate option to be the team’s starter moving forward.

The 49ers have Purdy, Lance, Brandon Allen, and veteran newcomer Sam Darnold on the quarterback depth chart, with the expectation being that Purdy is the starter and the No. 2 spot is up for grabs.

At this point, Lance may simply be competing for a backup spot unless the team decides to trade him before the start of the season.
