Halloween is one of the most important holidays for kids and candy lovers alike. Some of my best childhood memories include the sacks of candy my brother and I carried home after a night of trick-or-treating. We carefully planned routes and always made sure to visit the houses that were famous for having “good” candy or king-size candy bars. However, we also made sure to avoid the houses that were notorious for giving out terrible candy, or heaven forbid, raisins. Even though I no longer take part in trick-or-treating, I stock up on my favorite candy this time of year for those who visit our house. This information was averaged and weighted against Kroger’s candy sales projections for 2022 as well to complete the rankings and determine the most popular candy for Halloween this year.

10. 3 Muskateers

Mars Incorporated first introduced this nougat-filled treat in 1932. However, the 3 Muskateers looked a little different than it does today. It originally came in three pieces with the Neopolitan flavors; chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. But, it became a single bar in 1945 due to supply issues. Over the years, it became a holiday favorite and a solid contender in the list of top 10 Halloween candy.

9. Kit Kat

Total Weight: 135,672 lbs.

These sugary wafers are delicious and easy to share, so it’s no surprise to see Kit Kats on this list. They started in the U.K. in 1937 as Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp, but then got a name change in 1937. Hershey began producing and distributing them in the American market in 1970. Now, these chocolate bars are available around the world, and in a variety of fun flavors like pumpkin pie, lemon cake, banana, strawberry, caffe latte, and green tea.

My personal favorite Halloween candy is another Mars creation. The Milky Way was invented in 1923. And, it has the added distinction of being the first chocolate bar with filling to be mass-produced. A hundred years later, it remains one of the most popular Halloween choices.

And, it was an instant hit, especially since customers felt that they got two treats for the price of one. Honestly, I expected this masterpiece from Mars to take the top spot. The perfect combination of chocolate, caramel, and peanuts is hard to beat. Snickers bars, which happen to be named after the family’s horse, have been in production since 1930. It surpassed the $1 billion milestone in 2013, making it one of the most popular and profitable candy bars ever created.

The son of Frank Mars shared his father’s talent for chocolatey treats. He created this American favorite in 1941 after watching soldiers eating British-made chocolates with colorful shells. Initially, they were only sold to the military during World War II. However, they quickly became popular with people across the country and around the globe.

The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup has been an American favorite for decades. So, it should come as no surprise that it is first on our list of the top 10 Halloween candy. H.B. Reese, once a Hershey employee, concocted this treat in his own home. While he continued to use their chocolate for years, his sons eventually sold it to the chocolate giant in 1963. Since then, it has made over 100 different products within the brand. No matter what you top pick, the final tallies don’t lie; they prove that chocolate and peanut butter is a winning combination.

I’m sure many people will think that there are some fundamental Halloween options missing from this list, including the much-loved and despised candy corn. While there is always some level of subjectivity, the sales reports and past trends clearly show that people have strong feelings about their favorite candy.
