The Twins Have A Team-Friendly Deal With Carlos Correa

The Minnesota Twins were players for Carlos Correa immediately when free agency started.

They made it a priority to retain him because they loved what they saw from him in 2022.

He was incredibly effective as a hitter, with a .834 OPS, 22 home runs, and a .291 batting average; and as a fielder, as he impressed once again with his fluid movements, instincts, solid footwork, and soft hands.

When the bidding got to $350 million, the Twins were out: that’s what the San Francisco Giants offered.

Physical concerns with Correa’s ankle made SF nix the deal, though.

Then, he agreed to a $315 million contract with the New York Mets, but something similar happened and they didn’t even want to guarantee $160 million.

Enter the Twins.

They went from potentially signing him to a contract close to $300 million to securing his services for $200 million over the next six seasons.

That’s incredibly team-friendly for a player of Correa’s caliber, who was discussing 12-year deals with other clubs.

Yes, he can earn $270 million over 10 years in a best-case scenario, but that would mean he would be healthy to play the final years of his deal and the Twins would love to see that.

For the price (four option seasons worth $25, $20, $15, and $10 million), they would probably be happy to see those options vest.

When finalized, the deal, whether six years or 10, would not include any opt-outs for Carlos Correa. He’s with the #MNTwins at least through 2028 and potentially through 2032.

Considering the fact that the Twins are taking a chance on Correa’s ankle to hold up over the long-term, it’s a fair deal for everybody involved.

It’s definitely team-friendly considering Correa’s tremendous upside as a player.

It’s a day to celebrate in the Twin Cities.
