The Phillies Have Some Extra Motivation Next Week

Sports are often a powerful medicine.

They offer us peace, something to think about, and something to cheer for in times of sickness or despair.

In some cases, sports can offer a last tiny bit of happiness as we leave this world.

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark brought us a heart-breaking story about a cancer patient who lost his life this week, but not before watching his beloved Philadelphia Phillies make the World Series for the first time in 13 years.

“Charlie Abromitis passed away yesterday after battling cancer. His family picked out his urn. A Phillies urn. His funeral is Monday, first Phillies World Series game at home in 13 years. It will be Phillies themed. The Abromitis family is hoping the Phils can win the WS for him,” Clark tweeted.

An Incredibly Heartbreaking Story

Clearly, he was very fond of the Phillies and would have loved to watch them play in the World Series.

Hopefully the team can win one for Charlie.

He surely would be proud and happy.

Clark offered more details in another tweet, in the replies.

“Charlie was in and out of sleep when the Phillies clinched the NLCS Sunday at Penn Hospital. The family had him in his Phillies gear. They told him the Phils won and they are going to the World Series. The family says he smiled a little bit and moved his feet,” he wrote.

It’s unclear if the story got to the Phillies players or coaching staff: hopefully it does, so they can use Charlie as fuel and inspiration.

They shouldn’t promise a win, but they can promise they will give their all.

That should be enough.
