At the MLB level, having a lead is often a good omen for winning the game.

Teams that jump ahead on the score often take the “W”.

However, being down in the score is not something to worry about for the 2022 New York Yankees.

“As @ktsharp seems to mention every day, the Yankees are the only team in baseball that has a winning record in games where they trail at any point (20-18). Why does it always seem like they’re winning even when they’re losing? I think that’s why,” senior MLB writer and analyst Jayson Stark tweeted on Thursday, after the Yankees stole a win away from the Astros in the late innings.

There are two takeaways from that tweet.

One, the sole fact that the Yankees have a winning record when they trail at any point is incredibly impressive.

The Yankees Are Not Only Resilient: They Are Downright Dominant

We have seen them flip scores while being down one, two, three, or even more runs in a game this campaign: it really does seem like they have the calmness and patience to wait for their moment, work the count, and start rallies at the most opportunistic times.

But there is also an important thing to consider: yes, the Yankees are 20-18 in games in which they find themselves down in the score at any point.

Since they are 52-18 overall, it means that in 32 games they haven’t even been trailing.

32 games out of the 70 they have played (almost half) have been “smooth sailing” for the Bronx Bombers.

They are really a special group, and they do seem ready to return to playoff prominence this year if they can stay relatively healthy.
