Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Today we honor several great female athletes and figures in the sports world.

We’ve come a long way in society, but still have much work to do.

In baseball, strides have been made in recent years, with Rachel Balkovec becoming the first female manager in baseball history, taking over managerial duties for the Tampa Tarpons, a minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees.

One of many influential women in the history of baseball is softball legend and pitcher Jennie Finch.

This afternoon, Finch spoke with Lauren Shehadi on MLB Network to discuss the strides we’ve made as a society with inclusion of women, but also discussing the work that still needs to be done.

Today, Finch is putting on an event to help introduce the game to young girls with several fun activities planned.

The former pitcher talked about why it’s important to include girls and women in baseball, discussing the opportunities that are now available for them in the baseball realm.

She also praised Major League Baseball for taking the necessary steps to help provide women with new opportunities in the game.

Finch went on to talk about how important it is for girls to see women who have been successful in baseball and to have that confidence instilled in them from a young age, as they learn that it is possible for women to play important roles in the game.

The event will take place today in Chelsea Piers, New York.
