Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is now competing not just against the NFL, but also against NFL history after claiming his third Super Bowl championship on Sunday.

As was the case in his first two Super Bowl wins, including the one that came last year, his team trailed by 10 points at one juncture, but the Chiefs regained their poise and won it all.

In doing so, they sent the San Francisco 49ers home licking their wounds and wondering if they could ever go all the way, as it was the second time they had defeated the 49ers in the big game.

On Twitter, Mahomes said there was “never a doubt” he and his men would prevail.

In the first half, San Francisco took a 10-0 lead, and although the game wasn’t pretty, they were controlling the line of scrimmage, particularly on defense.

Mahomes and his team had trouble getting anything going with any real consistency, and their body language suggested that they were flustered.

But a mishandled punt by the Niners in the third quarter gave Kansas City the ball back in the red zone, and on the very next play, Mahomes found Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the end zone to put his team up, 13-10.

From that point on, the game was fought on even terms, and while both teams had miscues, the Niners had more of them.

The Chiefs are now a legitimate dynasty, and at age 28, there’s no telling how many more Vince Lombardi trophies Mahomes will end up collecting before it’s all said and done.
