The San Francisco 49ers‘ bad luck in terms of quarterback health continued in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, as Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury.

The team lost in blowout fashion, and on Monday, it got some bad news regarding the extent of the ailment and its prognosis.

Assuming Purdy undergoes a repair procedure, he should be ready to participate in at least some of training camp this summer.

However, if he has to undergo Tommy John surgery, there is the possibility he will miss all of the 2023 campaign — and possibly more.

Tommy John surgery is a procedure usually reserved for pitchers in baseball, and it can knock a player out for a year or two.

Perhaps no NFL team in recent memory has had the type of misfortune under center that the 49ers had to endure this season.

Starter Trey Lance suffered a severe ankle injury in Week 2, and after Jimmy Garoppolo returned to his old spot at QB1, he sustained a foot injury in Week 13.

It looked like the Niners’ season was, for all intents and purposes, over at that point, but Purdy played very well and started to look like their next franchise QB.

After he left Sunday’s contest with his elbow injury, his backup, Josh Johnson, came in, only to suffer a concussion.

That concussion forced Purdy to re-enter the game, but he was almost literally unable to throw the football, and with its passing attack completely disabled, San Francisco had no chance against a formidable Philadelphia Eagles team.

The good news is that if Purdy is fully healthy by midsummer and has no ill effects from his injury or surgery, the Niners should have a real shot at their sixth Super Bowl championship next season.
