NFL Insider Comments On The Bill O’Brien Hire

The New England Patriots have brought back a familiar face to lead their offense.

In 2022, the Patriots’ offense averaged just 21.4 points per game, which was their second-lowest mark in the past ten seasons.

They are in need of new offensive leadership, which is where the expertise of Bill O’Brien comes in.

The offseason has barely begun, but hiring Bill O’Brien could well be the most influential move the Patriots make this offseason.

A chance for them to get their offense on track after a wayward 2022 season.

O’Brien comes to the Patriots with over ten years of NFL coaching experience, including several years within the Patriots organization when he began his NFL coaching career.

Before the Patriots hired him, O’Brien worked as a member of the University of Alabama coaching staff, where he had an opportunity to work with Mac Jones.

This could be an excellent growth opportunity for Jones and the Patriots’ offense, especially considering their recent lack of success.

Jones is certainly making strides as a passer, and, when watching the Patriots games, it appears that he is on the precipice of a breakout season.

Can O’Brien be the difference-maker for Jones’ career?

The Patriots have a serious need for an offensive makeover.

Jones is one of the only offensive players that is locked in for the 2023 season.

Jakobi Meyers, the team’s number-one receiver, is a free agent, and aside from Rhamondre Stevenson, none of the Patriots’ other offensive players have proven to be elite difference-makers at the NFL level.

For Jones to continue to rise as a passer, O’Brien and the rest of the coaching staff will need to commit significant resources to pass-catchers in the offseason if they want any chance to succeed in 2023.
