After a disappointing 7-10 finish this past season, the New Orleans Saints are loading up for what looks to be a serious playoff run in 2023.

They signed veteran quarterback Derek Carr, who spent his nine seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, and he will represent a significant upgrade at that position.

The addition of defensive tackles Khalen Saunders and Nathan Shepherd will also help them improve a run defense that ranked toward the bottom of the NFL in yards and touchdowns allowed in 2022.

On Wednesday, the Saints made another notable addition when they snagged running back Jamaal Williams on a team-friendly three-year contract.

Fans are surprised New Orleans was able to acquire Williams for so little money.

After reaching the 600-yard mark just once in his first five pro seasons, Williams broke out in a big way in 2022 with 1,066 rushing yards and a league-high 17 rushing touchdowns.

With Alvin Kamara’s status for the 2023 campaign uncertain due to his pending battery charges, Williams can make sure the Saints enjoy some above-average production on the ground one way or another.

He should also be able to take some pressure off wide receivers Chris Olave and Michael Thomas and help open things up for them downfield by preventing defenses from dropping back into coverage on a consistent basis.

As of now, the Saints are clearly looking like the favorites to finish first in a rather weak NFC South, and their chances of making the playoffs for the first time since Drew Brees’ retirement are looking good.
