On Thursday, September 28, the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins started playing a baseball game.

Citi Field had been hit hard by rain those days, and the grounds crew hadn’t done a good job keeping the field playable.

The Mets entered the ninth inning leading, 1-0.

That was a crucial game for the Marlins as they were trying to fend off the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds in their quest for making the postseason.

The Marlins rallied and scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but the game was called due to the inclement weather and field conditions.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker argued for the game to be finished, but to no avail.

MLB determined that, in case the game was needed to determine which team made the postseason, the game was going to be played this week, on Monday, before the start of the Wild Card round.

The Fish were able to secure their ticket over the weekend, so there was no need to play.

Now, MLB has determined the fate of that contest.

“The Mets were awarded a win for their suspended game against the Marlins, which was never completed. (At the time of stoppage, the Mets trailed, 2-1, but both Marlins runs scored during an incomplete inning.) Officially, the Mets finished 75-87, the eighth-worst record in MLB,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Since the ninth inning wasn’t completed, the Mets ended up with the win.

The Marlins made the playoffs anyway, but they were eliminated in two games by the Philadelphia Phillies.
