Mets GM Comments On The Team’s Offseason
The New York Mets went to work after the World Series ended.
Of course, they wanted to be there instead of the Philadelphia Phillies, playing against the Houston Astros and on the verge of winning a title.
That’s probably why they entered the offseason determined to put themselves in a position to be there in 2023.
They have spent lots of dollars retaining their own free agents and bringing in new players.
They re-signed Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo and Carlos Carrasco (exercised a $14 million team option) and also welcomed Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, David Robertson and Jose Quintana.
They were reportedly doing their homework regarding Carlos Correa before he signed with the San Francisco Giants, and their offseason is probably not finished.
The Mets Are Probably Not Done Adding
Their general manager Billy Eppler talked about it.
“Billy Eppler on the Mets’ offseason: ‘A lot of the heavy lifting is done. It doesn’t stop us from being opportunistic.’ Eppler referenced the trade market as a way that he may still look to improve the roster. He also said he intends to ‘stay engaged’ on the reliever market,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Eppler referenced the trade market as a way that he may still look to improve the roster. He also said he intends to “stay engaged” on the reliever market.

What Eppler is saying is that the Mets probably won’t pursue another high-priced player, but if they see a good deal or an opportunity, they will still have the resources to pounce.
They, however, are likely to add a reliever or two because they lost Trevor May, Seth Lugo, Adam Ottavino, and others from the 2022 bullpen.
As the Francisco Lindor – Carrasco acquisition proved in 2021, the Mets aren’t afraid to make an impactful trade either.
In short, the Mets probably won’t try to sign a Carlos Rodon or Dansby Swanson-type, but they are likely not done upgrading the roster.
