It isn’t that often that a defending NBA champion has played as poorly as the Golden State Warriors have this season and not because of significant roster changes.

Yes, they have had to deal with some injuries, particularly to Stephen Curry, and star forward Andrew Wiggins has been out for almost a month while he tends to a personal matter.

But it seems inexplicable that they have been a poor defensive team and are just 7-26 away from Chase Center.

Still, the feeling around the NBA is that if the Warriors, who are currently on a three-game losing streak and in seventh place in the Western Conference, get and stay hot, they will be as dangerous as anyone come postseason time.

That’s exactly the sentiment former NBA player Eddie House echoed when he said that they’re the only team in the West he would fear.

“The only reason why — and I know they haven’t won games on the road — they got Steph (Stephen Curry). … In the finals last year, I’m like, ‘Let’s get a stop, let’s go,’ and Steph cut a look at me — it was like a lion seeing a gazelle or something it is about to eat, and Steph went to work from that point. So from that look, I know that he’s a killer and at any given moment he can take over games.”

Curry has always been considered a great player, but some doubted his ability to step up his game in huge moments or elevate his team singlehandedly above the sum of its parts.

But in Game 4 of last year’s NBA Finals, he proved those doubters wrong.

With the Warriors trailing the Boston Celtics 2-1 in the series and many saying the series was all but over, Curry put up 43 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead his team to a 107-97 win that forever changed the complexion of the matchup.

Golden State went on to take the next two contests and win its fourth world championship in eight seasons as Curry won his first NBA Finals MVP.

Nowadays, he is considered by many to be one of the 10 greatest players ever, and some even feel he has surpassed the legacy of LeBron James, who is also a four-time champion.
