In his previous five years in the NFL, quarterback Baker Mayfield’s talent has been undeniable, but he has only played to the top of his potential in scattered moments.

But this season, it looks like he has figured out how to be consistently excellent.

He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, and he led them to the NFC South title during the regular season while throwing for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Replacing the legendary Tom Brady, whom most consider the greatest player in league history, Mayfield took the Buccaneers to the playoffs where he engineered a 32-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles with 337 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and no interceptions.

On “Up & Adams,” host Kay Adams praised Mayfield for what he has done in the shadow of Brady.

“Baker had to to this after Brady.  It’s not easy. Look at New England post Brady,” Adams said.

Mayfield isn’t Brady, but he did finish the regular season ninth in passing yards and seventh in passing touchdowns, and he has cut down on his turnovers.

He had been considered prone to interceptions, but his interception rate of 1.8 percent this season is significantly lower than it was in his previous five seasons.

Against Philly, Mayfield directed an offense that had a total of 426 yards, including 307 passing yards, while second-year tight end Cade Otton led the team with eight catches and 89 yards.

Next up for Mayfield and Tampa Bay is a divisional-round matchup at the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Lions are strong favorites, but another win by Mayfield and his crew would further solidify the notion that he has finally figured things out.
