3 Moves The Mets Should Make This Offseason

After a 101-win season, the New York Mets had a disappointing end to their season after losing in the wild-card round.

With all the expectations of this team heading into this season, the collapse to lose the NL East was brutal.

The Mets had a 10-game lead in the division at one point in the season.

But, when the division was on the line against the Braves at the end of September the Mets got swept.

So as New York gets set for a long offseason, here are three moves they should make.

Re-Sign Top Pitchers

Two of the Mets’ best pitchers are set to be free agents this winter.

Edwin Diaz and Jacob deGrom are two pitchers the Mets need to bring back.

Diaz was arguably the best closer in baseball this year recording 32 saves.

While deGrom is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball when healthy.

But, health has been the issue with deGrom for a few years now.

The two-time Cy Young winner only appeared in 11 games this season, throwing 64.1 innings.

Both of these pitchers will command big contracts on the open market.

So the Mets must be ready to pay up.

Losing either of these pitchers in the offseason would be a major setback for New York headed into 2023.

Sign A Left-Handed Starter

The Mets have a righty-dominated starting rotation.

Last season the only lefty starter on the Mets was David Peterson, and he threw 105.2 innings.

New York needs to get some adversity in their rotation.

Some of the names they could be interested in are Jose Quintana, Martin Perez, Tyler Anderson, or even Clayton Kershaw.

All of those lefties could slide into the middle of the Mets rotation and produce.

Plus, the Mets could lose Taijuan Walker, Chris Bassitt, and the aforementioned deGrom in free agency.

New York will have to replace those starters with other capable pitchers if they want to compete for the playoffs next year.

The Mets need a left-handed starter and any of the aforementioned names will be upgrades.

Sign A Power Bat

The New York hitters did not show up in the wild-card round.

In two of these three games against the Padres, the Mets scored one or fewer runs.

Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor are two key cogs in the middle of the Mets’ order.

But, they need to add another power bat around them.

The big name that all Mets fans want is Aaron Judge.

The Yankees slugger is a free agent this offseason and he will be the most sought-after player.

Coming off a 62-homer season it is hard to imagine how lucrative of a contract he might get.

If not Judge, there are a few other names the Mets can bring in to add to their lineup.

Jose Abreu, J.D. Martinez, or Willson Contreras would all be upgrades in the Mets lineups.

Centerfielder Brandon Nimmo is also a free agent.

If the Mets move on from him, they will have a massive void to fill in the outfield.

This is a huge offseason ahead for the Mets and their front office has plenty of work to do.
