Founded by the Louisiana Educational Television Authority, WVUE was the first educational station in the New Orleans area. It began broadcasting in 1953, and for the first five years, its programming was limited to educational and instructional shows. Next, we’ll examine the station’s move to commercial programming in 1958. In this period, WVUE-DT Fox began airing news, variety shows, and sitcoms. Many of these shows are still beloved today, such as The Dick Van Dyke Show and Hogan’s Heroes. We’ll then move on to the station’s expansion of its programming lineup in the 1970s. This period saw the addition of children’s programming, with shows like Dragonfly TV. This educational series teaches kids about science, technology, engineering and math.
