In US news today and current events today, NowThis is shining a light on immigration news 2020, specifically detention centers in America. Homero Lopez is an immigration attorney who has represented detained immigrants in Louisiana for years. But in the past 6 months, he says his workload has more than quadrupled due to the 400% increase of immigrant detentions in rural facilities in the state. These rural facilities are harder to reach — which mean Lopez must make a four-hour trip once a week in order to provide services for detainees in the Pine Praire ICE facility, who have higher rates of deportation due to their lack of access to non-profit immigration services that are typically located to metropolitan areas.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is sending busses full of migrants and asylum seekers to the middle of nowhere in the Deep South — where their chances of deportation increase dramatically. In Louisiana, a state that recently lost its title of the world’s incarceration capital due to recent criminal reform legislation, is now filling its empty jails in rural parishes with ICE detainees, particularly asylum seekers. In just the past 6 months, the number of ICE detainees being held in the state has increased by over 400% and rising by the day.

In this explainer, we’ll answer the question of how Louisiana is becoming a hub for Immigration detentions. We’ll explore how a widely praised 2017 criminal reform bill paved the way for ICE to make the state an unlikely hub for detaining asylum seekers, and how these locations are strategically placed in rural areas where immigrants have less access to legal representation causing their deportations to rise drastically.
