Every weekend in October, the largest jail in the United States, the Louisiana State Penitentiary – commonly known as Angola Prison – holds a rodeo. The event brings in millions of dollars for the prison. Yet inmates often suffer serious injuries, especially in challenges involving a bull being released. What is little known is that the right of prison administrators to exploit prisoners in this way is protected by the 13th Amendment.
