The New York Mets were probably scared to death after sending many players to the World Baseball Classic.

Their worst fear came to reality: while celebrating Team Puerto Rico’s victory against the Dominican Republic, their star closer Edwin Diaz suffered a potentially serious knee injury.

Of course, it’s not the tournament’s fault, as freak injuries happen all the time and under any circumstances: cutting some vegetables, getting out of the tub, etc.

But here we are, and the Mets are waiting for details of Diaz’s injury after undergoing some imaging, likely an MRI.

“Edwin Díaz injured his right knee after tonight’s WBC game. He will undergo imaging tomorrow and we will update when appropriate,” the Mets tweeted last night.

Several media outlets and personalities reported that Díaz is scheduled for an MRI mid-day on Thursday.

Everything, however, is pointing out to an undesired outcome.

The fear is that he tore his ACL, as he couldn’t put any weight on his right knee.

That would be a worst-case scenario for the Mets, who are already down a few key relievers.

They would not be losing just any reliever: they would be without the best bullpen arm in baseball, one capable of striking out 118 batters in just 62 innings with a 1.31 ERA.

Seeing his brother Alexis (who pitches for the Cincinnati Reds) crying on the field last night was a tough scene.

We do hope that the MRI doesn’t show a torn ACL and Diaz can return this season.

Baseball needs all the exciting players it can have, and he is one of the most exciting pitchers in the game.
