Scathing attack on Nicola Sturgeon by her own SNP MSP over the Bottle Return Scheme

0

An SNP MSP launched a scathing attack on the Scottish Government’s deposit-return scheme – warning it will be a “disaster” for Scots firms.

Former cabinet minister Fergus Ewing launched saying hundreds of businesses were in a state of “fear” and “despair” and could go to the wall.

From August, cans and plastic or glass bottles will be covered by the scheme which means 20p deposit will be charged on every container, returned at a point of purchase. But firms argue it will be unwieldy, expensive and create cross-border issues as it won’t apply in the rest of the UK.

Mr Ewing said unless it was halted now it would “damage the reputation of Scotland”.

He branded it a “disaster of a scheme” and called for glass to be removed from the regime or risk the future of distillers and independent drinks producers.
