The West Bengal government on Saturday asked Kolkata Metro to compensate families whose houses in the Bowbazar area have developed cracks due to construction work of the East-West Corridor with Rs 5 lakh each within a month, mayor Firhad Hakim said. The affected shop owners of the area will also be compensated for the loss of livelihood based on a formula derived by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) — Rs 1.5 lakh for up to 100 sq ft, and Rs 5 lakh if more than 100 sq ft, he said.

Chhattisgarh sees 63 COVID-19 cases, two deaths; active tally now 427

Chhattisgarh on Saturday reported 63 COVID-19 cases at a positivity rate of 2.08 per cent, taking the tally to 11,77,096, while the death toll increased by two to reach 14,139, an official said. The recovery count rose by 72 and stood at 11,62,530, leaving the state with 427 active cases, he said.

Karnataka reports 163 new COVID-19 cases

Karnataka on Saturday reported 163 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total caseload to 40,66,705, the State Health Department said. There was no fatalities reported and the death toll remained at 40,250. The department in its daily COVID bulletin said 179 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 40,23,479 till date. Active cases stood at 2,934.

Over 5,500 litres of illicit liquor destroyed in Delhi: Excise dept

The Excise department of Delhi government on Saturday destroyed 5,516 litres of smuggled illicit liquor seized by its enforcement teams in recent months, officials said. According to the Excise department, 3,267 litres of illicit liquor was destroyed in Mayur Vihar, 1,285 litres in Sarita Vihar and 964 litres in Tilak Nagar.

Covid: 135 new cases in Delhi, positivity rate 2.12 pc

Delhi on Saturday recorded 135 fresh Covid cases with an increased positivity rate of 2.12 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. No new fatality was reported due to the viral disease. With these new cases, the capital’s Covid tally has climbed to 20,04,787 while the death toll stands at 26,506, the department said in its latest bulletin.

The death toll from a coal mine explosion in northern Turkey rose to at least 40 people Saturday, officials said. Desperate relatives had waited all night in the cold outside the state-owned TTK Amasra Muessese Mudurlugu mine in the town of Amasra, in the Black Sea coastal province of Bartin, hoping for news. There were 110 miners working in the shaft when the explosion occurred on Friday evening. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Saturday that 40 miners were confirmed dead. Eleven were injured and hospitalised, while 58 others managed to get out of the mine on their own or were rescued unharmed. The status of one remaining miner was unclear.

A Kashmiri Pandit was shot dead by militants in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. Puran Krishan was attacked near his residence in the Chowdhary Gund area of south Kashmir district, they said, adding that doctors declared Krishan brought dead after he was shifted to Shopian hospital. The area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the assailants, they added.
