Since it was announced that Don Mattingly wouldn’t be back to manage the Miami Marlins in 2023, the organization has been interviewing candidates and going through names.

At 69-93, the Marlins are obviously not ready to compete now, but they do have a surprisingly high number of talented young pitchers waiting for the front office to put together a competent offense.

For now, however, the managerial opening is the first thing on the agenda.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the team is down to four candidates for the job.

“Marlins are down to 4 finalists and a decision is expected soon: Skip Schumaker, Joe Espada, Matt Quatraro and a mystery candidate. The mystery man is apparently not Raul Ibanez, who had a great interview but dropped out because the timing isn’t right,” Heyman tweeted.

The Marlins Want A Young Manager

Evidently, the Marlins are not prioritizing experience.

They want a young manager who knows his way around analytics and advanced stats, to keep up with modern trends.

Espada has a lot of experience working on modern-thinking organizations such as the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros.

He is currently the Astros’ bench coach.

Quatraro fills this mold, too, as he is currently with the Tampa Bay Rays – perhaps MLB’s premier organization for analytics and sabermetrics.

Schumaker joined the San Diego Padres organization as a coach in 2018, and is currently the St. Louis Cardinals’ bench coach.

All of them are young, hungry candidates looking to start their managerial careers.

The Marlins want to take their time and make the right decision.

Hiring the right manager is extremely important as they try to return to relevancy in the upcoming future.
