This summer, something that was supposed to take place in 2020 will finally happen after COVID-19 put it on hold.

On June 24 and 25, the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, two historic rivals of the National League, will be facing off in the London Series.

This series was first played in 2019 between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

The Cubs and Cardinals were scheduled to play in 2020 before the pandemic hit.

However, three years later, the London Series will be making its return and the Cardinals and Cubs will go at it in a two-game series.

On Monday, during the game between the Cardinals and Miami Marlins, Maria O’Connor, the head of communications for MLB Europe, stopped by Bally Sports Midwest to preview the series and discuss the preparations that are being made.

O’Connor talked about everything that goes into the London Series and what it takes to prepare for it.

She says that close communication is required with the two teams involved.

An interesting note is that without a ballpark in London, work needs to be done at London Stadium, which is not designed to be a baseball stadium.

However, over a period of 18 days, crews undertake a project which involves turning London Stadium into a baseball venue for the brief two-game series.

Preparations begin 18 days before the event actually takes place.

When Chip Caray asked O’Connor if she expected for an offensive outburst, referencing the barrage of runs put up by the Red Sox and Yankees in 2019, O’Connor said she hopes for a similar outcome in 2023.
