Massive US Storm Unleashes Blizzards, Tornadoes and Snarls Air Travel

0

A massive storm is unleashing road-closing blizzards across the northern Great Plains and spawning tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma, knocking out power to thousands and causing delays in air travel that are bound to reverberate throughout the US.

Snow is forecast to drop at rates of as much as 2 inches (5 centimeters) per hour, along with 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts dropping visibility to zero on many roads across South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska, said Frank Pereira, a senior branch forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center. Trailing the storm’s core is a long cold front spread across the southern Plains that will bring widespread thunderstorms and possibly tornadoes across Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Louisiana.

For the north “it is a slow moving system so there will be multiple days of heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing rain,” Pereira said. “The Oklahoma City area got heavy rains, and it is currently impacting the Dallas-Fort Worth area.”
