How Louisiana Succession Works When No Will

0

When a Louisiana resident dies with no last will and testament, they are deemed to have died “intestate.” Louisiana law governs who inherits from the person who died without a will. There are certain steps that surviving family members must go through to complete the Succession of the deceased person. These steps include: evaluating the assets and debts of the deceased; determining and identifying the intestate heirs of the deceased; getting an independent administrator appointed; opening an estate account at a financial institution; filing the required detailed lists of assets and debts; obtaining the appropriate court orders signed by the appropriate judge ordering the disposition of assets; and tranferring the assets to the appropriate heirs.
