Clay Downham is a guitarist and keyboardist based in New Orleans, Louisiana, performing regularly at clubs on Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street, a church in the historic Tremé neighborhood, and elsewhere throughout the city. Downham earned a B.M. in Jazz Performance and B.A. in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, summa cum laude, and a M.M. in Music Theory at the University of Colorado Boulder. As an accomplished independent scholar, Clay is an expert on the music of Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept, and historical approaches to playing harmonically outside. Having presented his scholarship at conferences internationally and throughout the United States, Clay’s current work facilitates a much needed dialogue between performing musicians and academics.
