The starting staff of the St. Louis Cardinals has been anything but stellar this season.

Every starter has an ERA north of four and only one starter appears to be taking charge and leading the rotation, that being Miles Mikolas.

Other starters such as Steven Matz certainly have not been performing well.

After a four-inning six-run start on Wednesday, Matz’s position as a starter became a little less certain.

On Friday, the team’s announcer, Chip Caray stopped by a local St. Louis radio show to discuss the team’s pitching woes and how they can be corrected in the short term.

Caray mainly focused on Matz, stressing that the important thing about pitching is for pitchers to locate their pitches well, something that Matz has been unable to do this season.

The Cards announcer talked about how Matz is a pitcher who relies heavily on his sinker, but that he has run into problems recently because his sinker has been elevated, making it much easier for hitters to capitalize.

Matz has yet to win a game this season, with all of his decisions being losses.

He is now 0-6 with a 5.72 ERA.

Caray also talked about left-hander Matthew Liberatore, the team’s top pitching prospect.

The veteran announcer commented on what Liberatore could bring to the rotation and how his emergence could ultimately help the Cardinals out as they look to sort out this mess.

Caray believes that a few strong starts from the young left-hander could really give the rotation the boost it needs while the Cards wait for the trade deadline to approach.
