Amicus Briefs arent always friendly to the court in Natchitoches, Louisiana

You aren’t sending the judge a Love Letter with an amicus brief. People who file as a “friend of the court”, aren’t always friendly. They are trying to get their point across in either a self-interested or greater-than-themselves manner.

With social media, there can be more options to how amicus briefs are shared. Now we can send pics and videos, unlike in Roman times. Some people may even have an option to actually talk to a judge in person, as a little bird tweeting and chirping in their ears.

Some Amicus Briefs may bring joy to an old judges heart and inspire them to take on your language in their decision-making process. There are many factors that can sway opinions.

Should our civil rights lay on the shoulders of a judge?

When Judge Owsley laughed at receiving 25 faxes about the law, it put my mind at ease. The courtroom was packed with other defendants and I thought it looked like a good show of humility on his part to show that he really is having a good time on the bench. But that was the only time he ever laughed out loud at my 5 hearings and a trial ordeal.

Over time, as we got closer to my trial, Monday April 11, at my sentencing, he said the amicus briefs got worse. He sent a message to me that he didnt like the public, the world, getting involved in my ID criminal case. My ID crime is supposed to be private affairs, within his jurisdiction. Outsiders don’t have the first hand knowledge like a judge and prosecutor have and therefore are inconvenient pests.

So, we can look at Amicus Briefs in different ways.

Third Circuit Internal Rule 20:
“Filing Fee for Filing Amicus Briefs A filing fee in the amount of $100.00 shall be paid in connection with filing an Amicus Curiae brief. This fee shall be due at the time of filing the Motion for Leave to File Amicus Brief. For good cause shown, the mover may request a waiver of this fee.”
