Adam Wainwright Expresses Disappointment Over His Injury

The St. Louis Cardinals caught wind of some bad news on Thursday when it was announced that veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright would begin the season on the injured list.

The two-time World Series champion suffered a groin injury in the weight room prior to Team USA’s championship matchup against Japan in the World Baseball Classic.

The 41-year-old is entering the final season of his storied MLB career and was on track to make one last Opening Day start.

Now, that assignment will go to either Miles Mikolas, Jack Flaherty, or Steven Matz.

On Thursday, Wainwright expressed his disappointment over the injury, but also noted a silver lining.

Wainwright said he was hoping to start Opening Day and pitch a full season, both of which are no longer options, as he’ll be out several weeks as he recovers from the groin injury.

But he also stated that if he had to choose between a full April and a full October, he would choose the latter.

The Cardinals were eliminated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card Series last October.

Though he was on the postseason roster, Wainwright did not pitch in either of the two games after an uncharacteristically poor showing in the month of September.

After the team was eliminated, Wainwright had expressed his frustration over not pitching against the Phillies in the Wild Card Series.

The three-time All-Star is hoping to right the ship in 2023 and pitch on the biggest stage when St. Louis needs him the most.
