New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso made fans happy with his latest announcement: he will be taking part in the 2022 Home Run Derby, as part of the All-Star festivities.

He made it to the All-Star Game, too, as one of four Mets chosen to play in the Midsummer Classic.

Everybody knows, however, that he will be the main attraction of the Home Run Derby.

“Official: Pete Alonso will compete in the 2022 Home Run Derby on July 18. He made the announcement on Instagram. Alonso is looking to become the first slugger in history to win three consecutive Derbies. The only other player to win three was Ken Griffey Jr. (1994, 1998-99.),” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Nobody has won three Home Run Derbies in a row before, and only the Junior has taken the competition three times.

If he wins this year, Alonso can match Griffey’s total output and establish a new record for consecutive editions won.

Alonso Is Built To Be A Perennial Contender As Long As He Participates

The competition is tailor-made for Alonso, a player with incredible raw power.

He may not post the highest batting averages year in and year out, but he is always among the leaders in the most exciting MLB stat: home runs.

Alonso won the 2019 edition in his rookie year, when he hit 53 and broke a record for first-year players.

There was no Home Run Derby in 2020 due to the pandemic, but he won the 2021 edition with another impressive and dominant showing.

The participants in the 2022 derby are still not known, but Giancarlo Stanton, another past winner, announced his desire to play.

It will likely be another exciting day for fans who love amazing displays of power.
