The Seattle Mariners understood that, to win in MLB, talent and skill is often not enough.

Off-the-field chemistry is usually very, very important.

That’s why they, according to editor of SeattleSports.com Brent Stecker, listened to budding star Julio Rodriguez and decided to trade for a veteran he looks up to: Carlos Santana.

“#Mariners trade for Carlos Santana could be huge because Julio Rodríguez clearly loves him. They have an established friendship from working out together in the offseason. M’s brought in a proven vet their 21-year-old phenom looks up to,” Stecker tweeted.

Reports from Seattle state that Santana’s work ethic and veteran guidance has been contagious, and now most of the clubhouse has not only embraced him as a new member of the team, but now see him as one of the leaders.

Santana Is A Valued Clubhouse Presence In Seattle

Santana has played in MLB since 2010, and understands what it takes to win and succeed.

The Mariners sent two prospects to the Kansas City Royals and acquired Santana, one of J-Rod’s mentors.

The first baseman’s power had disappeared during his time with the Royals.

With the Mariners, however, it appears to have returned, as he is slashing a cool .282/.404/.538 with three blasts in 47 plate appearances.

If the Mariners can keep Santana productive over the course of the season, the trade will be considered a robbery.

They have barely lost since he landed in Seattle.

However, even if he cools off some, he will still be a valued member of the clubhouse and the dugout, someone who the young players can go to for advice on how to deal with things on and off the field.
