Sometimes wearing a bra can feel like a necessary evil—you don’t really want to wear one, but you do want the support that an au naturel look doesn’t provide. And while underwire is tried and true in terms of lift and support, it can be very unforgiving when it comes to comfort and movement—which is where having the best wireless bra will come in handy. So, if you find yourself racing home at the end of each day to rip your bra off Flashdance style, it might be time to opt for a wire-free option.

Bra shopping can be tedious, and an ill-fitting bra can be uncomfortable at best (especially for those with bigger busts). So, we’ve found the best wireless bras just for you, with the help of Victoria’s Secret bra fitting associate Alana Antol for more insight on navigating the what, when, and why of shopping for wireless bras.

Whether you need a simple layering bralette to wear underneath your favorite sweaters or a new and improved source of everyday support, shop our list of the best (and most comfortable) wireless bras below.

Why Choose a Wireless Bra?

There are a couple of reasons why a wireless bra might triumph over your standard underwire option, the greatest among them being comfort. “Some people prefer a wireless bra mainly for comfort, or if they’ve had any kind of surgical procedure—like a mastectomy, breast augmentation, or anything like that,” Antol offers. Underwire can also end up feeling really tight, and we’ve all felt its jab at some point or another.

What to Look for In a Wireless Bra

While wireless bras host a few different features compared to bras that hold an underwire, you’ll still want to keep in mind similar attributes when picking one out—like material, coverage, and padding. If you’re looking for optimal support, Antol recommends looking for a slightly molded or padded cup—not for a push-up effect, necessarily, but as more of an ‘enhanced’ feature. “This will ensure your breast tissue is formed or molded into the cup with a natural look that gives some lift or shape, something that underwire may typically provide,” she says.

When it comes to fabric, Antol always prefers “buttery, stretchy fabrics, or ones that have that ‘silky smooth’ feel.” And while cotton is certainly comfortable, Antol notes that it seems to stretch out and lose shape quicker than other fabrics (like spandex or nylon). Of course, weather and season can play into this consideration as well. Lighter, breathable fabrics are always preferable when temperatures rise to keep moisture from accumulating and leaving you with a dreaded variation of boob sweat.

How to Find the Best Fit In a Wireless Bra

If you want your wireless bra to serve its purpose (or any bra, for that matter), make sure you know how to look for the perfect fit. “The best way to know is to go get measured,” Antol states. “Keep in mind, all brands typically have different sizing and sizing conversions. So what size you wear at Victoria’s Secret might be different from what you wear at Aerie, Soma, or wherever!” If you’re shopping online and aren’t sure of your size, you can do a self-measurement at home with a flexible measuring tape—measuring above, below, and directly across your bust. This is more of a guideline, but if you still need a bit of help, there are a plethora of YouTube videos like this one that will walk you through it.

Because wireless bras are built differently, they may have a slightly different fit. “The fit of a wireless bra may be a bit more snug, and may feel like it’s ‘hugging’ you,’ Antol relays. She also notes that if you’re feeling smushed or spilling out anywhere (like under your armpits or around the band), the size is likely too small. In contrast, Antol notes that “if it’s too large of a size, you’ll have unfilled space between your breast tissue and the cup of the bra, also known as gaping.”
