Yankees Fans Have A Past Title To Celebrate Wednesday

New York Yankees fans surely are still disappointed about how their season finished.

They were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series and haven’t won a World Series since 2009.

However, they can always find some solace while looking at the past.

The eighties were not exactly a fruitful decade for the Yankees, an organization with fans used to winning.

By the time the 1996 season rolled around, the Yankees hadn’t won a Fall Classic since 1978, in the days of Ron Guidry, Reggie Jackson, and others.

They won 92 games in the regular season and had to face the 96-win Atlanta Braves, a team with a wonderful rotation.

The Braves took the first two games at Yankee Stadium, and the crowd was extremely disappointed.

The Best Was Yet To Come

However, the best was yet to come.

The Yankees went to Atlanta and took three straight games.

Then, both teams returned to Yankee Stadium and the Yankees took Game 6 with a 3-2 score.

That Game 6 happened today, but 26 years ago.

It was the start of a dynasty that yielded four World Series championships in a span of five years.

The closest thing to that was the San Francisco Giants’ run from 2010 to 2014, with three Fall Classics in five years.

A very young Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, John Wetteland, Andy Pettitte, Charlie Hayes, Paul O’Neill, Darryl Strawberry, and others were some of the stars of that team.

For the Yankees, that year represented a return to glory and the start of an impressive run.
