Originally, The Terror was a 2007 historical fiction horror novel from the mind of Dan Simmons, a prolific author with a fascinating and diverse history of genres under his belt.

The second season went with its own story, independent of any previous works, and the audience didn’t share the same enthusiasm, though critical scores on Rotten Tomatoes were generally favorable.

Now, Season 3 is on the way, and, like the first outing, the Devil in Silver is going with another book adaptation. This time, the author is Victor LaValle, winner of the Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, and World Fantasy Awards for his works.

The Terror series is not known for its Hollywood-esque jump scares and expensive CG elements but more of a creeping, claustrophobic dread and the instinctive fear of the unseen or unknown.

Season 3 looks to continue the theme of skulking malevolence within a mental institution setting.

The question is: Can it recapture the magic of “grounded realism meets ambiguous paranormality” so carefully crafted in the seasons that precede it?

What Will The Terror Season 3 Be About?

The intimate details of AMC’s announcement remain hidden. But that doesn’t mean AMC doesn’t want us to know anything.

Pepper is the primary protagonist, and thanks to a series of unlucky events (which sounds like the average morning around here), he ends up institutionalized. Unfortunately, the New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital isn’t exactly a happy, safe space for poor Pepper.

The hospital’s name is interesting itself, suggesting a transformation of some kind — Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, anyone?

AMC’s written preview also suggests something darker, echoing the season’s title with the suggestion of the devil himself.

Only a secretive mental institution could harbor doctors with dark secrets, patients with malevolent and twisted psyches, and the devil.

AMC’s synopsis conjures images of falsely animated, immoderately grinning nurses gripping scissors in white-knuckled hands.

AMC doesn’t elaborate further, only suggesting that part of the evil Pepper will experience may come from himself.

Who Will Star in The Terror: Devil in Silver?

Dan Stevens will play Pepper. Stevens is known for his roles in 2014’s The Guest, 2017’s The Beast, and Marvel’s Legion, but he’s probably best known for his role as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey.

The supporting cast members are in place as well.

I’m thrilled to be a part of ‘The Terror: Devil in Silver.’ This series is a dark symphony of psychological horror and gripping drama, set to rock the audience.

-Dan Stevens

Devil in Silver isn’t much of a departure from Steven’s previous work, with his role in Marvel’s Legion landing him in a mental institution as well.

It would seem that Dan digs this sort of role, though it will undoubtedly be a darker one than Marvel’s vision.

What is the Release Date?

Currently, there is no release date other than the claim that it will hit sometime in 2025. The cast was only recently announced, and the series is probably still in the writing and pre-production phase.

How Many Episodes Are in The Terror: Devil in Silver?

The third season of The Terror will feature six episodes, a far cry from the ten episodes of Seasons 2 and 1.

However, with costs up and various streaming platforms making strategic changes, a six-episode season will soon become the rule rather than the exception.

Hopefully, six episodes will be more than enough to bring Victor LaValle’s vision to life. If they can capture the dark atmosphere and dread of LaValle’s page-turner, the third season will be a success.

The Crew Behind the Third Season of The Terror

Not only is Dan Stevens starring in the lead role, but he’s also an executive producer alongside Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire), Victor LaVelle (Author), David Zucker, Scott Lambert, Alexandra Milchan, Guymon Casady, Karyn Kusama, and Ridley Scott.

Scott Free Productions and Emjag Productions are the two production companies behind the third season.

Scott Free Productions has a long and illustrious history of stellar movie content, dating back to the 1970s when it was Scott Free Enterprises.

Recent movies and TV shows have delivered mixed results. The Man in the High Castle, The Good Wife, and Mercy Street succeed, while The Passage, Raised by Wolves, and Napoleon fall short.

Emjag Productions has a smaller pedigree, with The Terror Season 2 and The Silence being the most well-known on the list.
