You guys, Chicago PD has been on FIRE this season!

After two incredible episodes that kept us on the edge of our seats, Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3 intends to keep up that momentum with another strong hour.

At least, that’s what we’re gathering from the Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3 spoilers!

Martel’s Death is Sure to Leave an Impact

As we saw in Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 2, the majority of the team was positively gutted by the loss of one of their own.

In the pulse-pounding hour that felt ripped from the scenes of an action-thriller, Ruzek hit the ground running, spending an entire hour chasing down the person who killed his partner.

We saw him partner up with an exciting future addition to the team, fearless Kiana Cook, in an adrenaline-fueled episode that didn’t slow down in the slightest until a minute before the credits.

As a result, Martel’s death barely had the opportunity to sink in with the full unit, as the emphasis throughout the hour from many was that they’d “feel it later.”

One has to imagine that, even on the fringes or peripherals, we’ll start to see the unit “feeling” that loss as they go about their routine lives after that devastation.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the hour refers to her death in any number of ways, from commentary about a funeral or memorial to reference to all that she left behind.

In a season where showrunner Gwen Sigan teased a focus on “identity” and more, Martel’s death will likely have many of the characters reevaluating various aspects of their lives, jobs, and relationships.

Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3 Marks the Return of Burgess

Unfortunately, Kim was absent from Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 1 and that harrowing Ruzek-centric episode, but thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer to see her.

She’ll be returning from her conference away just in the nick of time, given that she’ll likely want to support and grieve alongside Ruzek after Martel’s death.

Burgess is there in time to also help the unit as they nab a new case, a robbery.

Various images for the episode feature her, as the team is often huddled over computer screens, trying to figure things out and solve the case.

As it marks Burgess’ first episode of the season, we can only hope that we’ll get a line or two that may catch us up with where she’s been and give us an idea of her trajectory this season.

However, we likely won’t get too much information just yet as our Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3 spoilers confirm that this installment will center around Atwater.

Atwater is at the Center of Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3

Keeping the character-centered pattern up, we’ll be shifting away from Voight and Ruzek in favor of Atwater this time around.

The episode “Off Switch” will heavily feature Atwater as he works more directly with a forensic psychologist on a case.

If anyone would be open to that unique perspective on the job, it would be Atwater, who tends to be the most open-minded and amenable when working with new people.

An Atwater-centric means we’ll get Atwater focus and perspective during this case, which is particularly fitting given the nature of the case.

It was a robbery case on Chicago PD Season 11 Episode 5 that resulted in tragedy and led to Atwater beating himself up and second-guessing himself over what he missed.

Later, the results carried into his other centric show, Chicago PD Season 11 Episode 11, where his focus was diverted, and he had to make peace with what happened and move on.

Atwater landing another armed robbery case could feel redundant, but if this is a way for him to fully feel he’s made progress since his last issues with them, it could be a significant mark of his evolution and growth.

A Forensic Psychologist Angle Adds Something Fresh to the Unit

It’s not the first time that Intelligence has worked with someone as a case consultant.

That element has been working its way into the series and the unit as recently as the compelling character Jo Petrovic.

It’s just as exciting here, particularly because the series has done a fascinating job incorporating darker and more psychological angles to cases.

Our Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 3 spoilers suggest that a forensic psychologist will assist with the armed robbery case.

And that’s such a fascinating turn of events.

Forensic Psychology is an intriguing area of practice where a trained psychologist uses psychology and applies it to the legal system in many valuable ways.

Here, the person will likely be helping Intelligence better understand the headspace of their armed robber or potential suspects.

She could also be useful in helping them assess witnesses.

The “she” in question is Val Soto, played by guest star Tell Me Lies‘ Natalee Linez.

We have two images of Val Soto, both of which show her where she may be at a crime scene, as one of them features an officer ensuring that she stays behind the yellow tape.

We also see Atwater sitting at the bar in the promo and flirting with Val.

The two hit it off nicely and had a conversation while having drinks.

We also overhear Val’s voice, which sounds like she’s profiling Kevin, assessing his characteristics, and telling him about himself.

She brings up some of the things that have loomed over Atwater for some time, including how he’s a person who seems to perpetually appear to be a caretaker who prioritizes others ahead of himself.

She inquires if he has an “Off Switch,” which means the episode’s title is no coincidence.

It’s likely a reference to whatever time we spend with Atwater learning how to indulge in an endearing romance in his personal life during his off time.

But Chicago PD also loves to play with the titles and have them hold multiple meanings, which means it’ll likely also reference something involving the case.

We’ll have to see, though.
