So, let’s delve into some of the spoilers for the season premiere!

Voight’s Near-Death with Matson Still Lingers

Interestingly enough, it feels like the season may kick things off with some focus on Voight, and it’ll be a storyline that unfolds throughout much of the season.

Voight has had some harrowing moments in the past, but Voight’s experience in the season finale was most likely the closest he came to death since we met the man.

Even someone who seemingly has a tough exterior, like Voight, isn’t exempt from lasting repercussions and trauma after a scary experience.

It seems that the season premiere may opt to explore that, as we’ll be catching up with Voight and the rest of the unit a month after his capture and torture.

A lot of things can happen in a month.

When we caught up with showrunner Gwen Sigan, she teased that Voight is burying himself in work to cope with what happened with Matson and may potentially be burning his team out in the process.

If it has been a full month since what happened, then one can only imagine how exhausted the team may be if Voight has them hitting the ground running and trying to keep up with him as he runs from his respective demons.

Overburdened and Cases Keep Coming

The synopsis teases that in the episode “Ten Ninety-Nine,” the unit may be overwhelmed by several cases that cross their path.

Voight is probably trying to keep up a certain momentum to distract himself from the series of terrible things that have happened to him in rapid succession recently.

We have to consider that not only has he undergone a terrifying situation in which he almost died at the hands of a serial killer and even saw his best friend, Olinsky, in the process — but he has also lost his pseudo-daughter with Hailey relocating.

He’s still mourning the loss of Noah, who seemed to remind him a bit of his son.

Voight has a lot on his plate emotionally, and he’s passing the buck a bit to the rest of the team as well, who may be feeling the burn now that they’re a person down.

With Hailey gone, they have more work to do and one less person to share the load with, and it’s doubtful that we’ll be seeing any type of replacement in the first installment.

Since everything happened, it’s also unlikely that anyone has stepped in during the month’s time frame.

The team probably feels stretched thin, and the major crimes are piling up on their desk, but now, the summary teases that the team will tackle a significant drug bust.

Chapman Steps In as Voight’s Confidant

Voight and Chapman have always had a unique dynamic that the series has hinted at since she first appeared.

They have a deep understanding of one another, making them work well together and confide in one another in small ways.

In some ways, they’re similar regarding keeping their emotions close to the vest and trying to keep people at arm’s length, and that’s likely why they managed to forge a bond.

But it seems that with Hailey gone, Voight may need someone to confide in a bit more, and Chapman may step up to the plate.

She’s pretty hands-on, and the images of her indicate that she may assist with this drug bust case.

In one of them, we see her speaking to Voight.

She looks serious and maybe even concerned, and it focuses more on her reaction to him, as she’s centered in the photo.

We also have another image of her appearing serious or pensive.

The team is already overworked and overburdened.

Chapman may offer assistance and ensure Voight slows things down lest she does it for him.

She knows that he’s not doing well, and she will make her presence known whether he wants it or not.

Is the Episode Heavy on the Guys?

Even though we barely see Voight in one of the photos, we know that the hour will still focus on him dealing with the aftermath of Matson.

But the stills also give us a healthy dose of Atwater, Ruzek, and Torres as well.

We don’t see Kim at all, which is interesting and makes one wonder if the teases about her contemplating the next stages in her career are correct.

Or she simply may not have had press images that focused exclusively on her.

We also don’t see any images of Trudy Platt either.

The guys do look focused and determined to solve the latest case but overwhelmed, too.

Torres is still wearing one of his signature white tee shirts, and at least one image of him wearing the CPD vest on the scene.

It may be a very active case, especially given the one image of a character who may be an asset to the case or a suspect as he possibly reaches for a gun.

Ruzek looks very handsome and incredibly focused on the task at hand.

He seems a bit stumped as he pores over case files and whatever is on his computer screen while he works at his desk.

The case will be an involved one and action-packed, too.
