This segment from the “What’s in a Name, Part 3” episode of the series “Lost Louisiana” from December 7, 2006, features Charlie Whinham’s visit to Avery Island in Iberia Parish, the home of the McIlhenny Company and their famous Tabasco Sauce. Whinham talks to Dr. Shane Bernard, the McIlhenny Company’s historian and curator, about the geography of the island, the origin of its name, the history of the Avery and McIlhenny families, the discovery of the island’s salt dome, the Civil War battle over control of the salt dome, and the archaeological significance of the area. Whinham and Bernard also take a walking tour of the island, including the site of the first Tabasco Sauce factory. This story includes footage of the Avery Island salt dome and the current Tabasco factory.
