In basketball, the most common colloquialism is that offense wins games and defense wins championships.

In baseball, the same holds true.

Though it’s much different than basketball’s style of offense and defense, both are equally important in baseball, and on Wednesday, second baseman Tony Kemp showed just why that is.

The Oakland Athletics infielder made a nice diving play during the A’s game against the Chicago Cubs in Cactus League play, ranging to his left and making a throw from his knees to rob Cody Bellinger of a hit.

On Twitter, the A’s posted a video of the play, showing what Kemp is capable of on the defensive end.

This certainly was a solid play by Kemp out at second base.

The play was not an easy one by any stretch of the imagination, but Kemp certainly made it look that way.

He was quick to the ball and ranged to his left in a timely manner, making a solid throw from his knees to nab the former National League MVP and Rookie of the Year.

Jesus Aguilar quickly raced to the bag and was there to receive Kemp’s throw and complete the play, retiring Bellinger in exciting fashion.

Kemp reached the Major Leagues in 2016 with the Houston Astros and made a brief stop with the Cubs in 2019.

Since 2020, he has been a member of the A’s.

And he put on quite a show on the defensive end with this epic diving play to rob Bellinger of a base-hit.
