0

The blast took place at Westlake Chemical’s Petro Complex 2 Unit in the small city of Sulphur at around 11pm, state police say. There have been no reports of fatalities as of Tuesday morning. A company spokesman told a local station that the Sulphur, Louisiana chemical complex was undergoing maintenance at the time. The blast happened Monday at 11pm and there have been no reports of fatalities. The facility makes ethylene. The group American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers calls it the ‘world’s most important chemical.’ It’s made by heating up oil or natural gas with steam to ‘crack apart’ molecular bonds, which sends ethylene rising up, the group says on its website . It’s used to make plastics as in polyethylene, polyester and synthetic rubber.
