In early February, about a week before Super Bowl LVII, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin was involved in an incident in a Phoenix-area hotel where he allegedly committed an act of sexual misconduct against a woman.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer has asserted that he didn’t do anything wrong during the supposed incident, and he has even filed a $100 million lawsuit against the Marriott hotel in which it occurred.

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith said on his show, “Know Mercy,” that he believes Irvin when the former star says he did nothing wrong that day.

“I saw the video. … I don’t know what happened. All I know is what I saw. What I saw was a 45-second conversation in the lobby — 45 seconds, and then they went their separate ways. It’s all I know. I have no idea what was said between him and the young lady he was talking to. … Devoid of the facts, I believe what he tells me because I believe in him.”

In the 1990s, Irving was one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers, and he was a major part of the Cowboys’ championship reign that yielded three Super Bowl victories in four years.

In 12 seasons, he accumulated 11,904 receiving yards and 65 touchdowns, and he was named to five straight Pro Bowls between 1991 and 1995.

Irvin has always also been one of the strongest personalities in the NFL and perhaps in all of sports, which had earned him a role as an analyst over the years after his playing career ended.

However, the hotel incident in Arizona isn’t the only controversy he has been involved in.

He has been accused of sexual misconduct before, although one of those accusations, which occurred in 1996, was later revealed to be completely fabricated.

Irvin also faced sexual assault accusations in 2007 and 2017, although he never faced any criminal charges as a result, and a civil suit that was levied against him as a result of the 2007 incident was later settled.
