In #Louisiana, lawmakers advance a measure to legalize recreational #cannabis in the state. The bill, sponsored by #republican representative Richard Nelson, passed the #House Administration of Criminal #Justice Committee by a 7 to 5 #vote. Under the legislation, #adults 21 and older would be allowed to possess up to two and a half pounds of #marijuana, make purchases from licensed #retailers, and grow as many as 6 plants for personal use with a relevant license. A separate proposal would establish a specific #tax structure, while the state’s Office of #Alcohol and #Tobacco Control would be granted regulatory authority over the market. One of the legislation’s original provisions requiring the approval of Louisiana residents through a #2022 voter referendum was replaced during committee discussion with an amendment giving local jurisdictions the ability to opt out of allowing cannabis business operations in their area. This comes as a key House committee overwhelmingly cleared another measure permitting the state’s #MMJ patients to access marijuana flower, which has not been available since medical sales began in #2019. Though #March polling indicates 67 percent of Louisianans support recreational cannabis legalization, the chances of Nelson’s proposal passing are unclear. #Democratic #Governor John Bel Edwards, who previously opposed the policy, has more recently said he will reserve judgement until the bill reaches his desk. It now heads to the #Republican-controlled house floor before facing #Senate consideration.

In the #entertainment sector, #reggae-#rock band Slightly #Stoopid launches their own cannabis, #spirits, and #wellness brand into the #California market. The San #Diego-based group, who are longtime #marijuana #advocates, partnered with multiple companies to debut their initial product lineup under the name Stoopid #Organics. The offerings include two signature seed varieties developed with the #Humboldt #Seed Company, pre-rolls created in collaboration with Long #Beach cannabis business Seabright Farms, and a full spectrum hemp oil produced by LifePatent Labs of #Wyoming. A portion of proceeds from the sales will go to #nonprofit The Last Prisoner Project. The band expects to release additional products in the near #future, such as their #exclusive #strains, which are currently being #cultivated from their signature seeds by Humboldt glass #greenhouse grower, HyGrow. This isn’t Slightly Stoopid’s first foray into the #cannabis space, as their concerts have been sponsored by several different marijuana companies, like Ghost #Vapes. Stoopid Organics products are now available #online and at select California #dispensaries.

In other #international #news, #Israeli #pharma #tech company Syqe #Medical receives regulatory approval to export and sell it’s #microdosing #cannabis inhaler on the #Canadian market. The metered-dose device, which launched in #Israel nearly two years ago, utilizes a specialized #cartridge to deliver 500 micrograms of #THC per #inhalation. In the first research of its kind, the results of clinical trials conducted at the #Rambam Medical Center, which were published in the #European #Journal of Pain last #summer, revealed 3 to 4 doses per day effectively reduced pain in patients without the potentially debilitating #psychoactive side #effects commonly experienced with traditional marijuana use. In comparison, MMJ patients typically consume one #gram of cannabis containing 15 percent THC, or 150,000 #micrograms per day. The medical device license from #Health #Canada comes a couple months after Syqe’s flagship product obtained #European Regulatory Approval, and is prompting the company to pursue marketing under Israel’s state subsidized health insurance, as well as #FDA approval in the #US and certifications from several other, unnamed European countries. Though Syqe did not disclose a specific distribution partner in their latest announcement, a #2019 agreement is leading industry experts to speculate that Terrascend will be the producer to bring their inhaler to Canada’s market.
