Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 5G speed test reveals the X70 modem benefits

A new Galaxy S23 series 5G modem analysis by the makers of Speedtest – Ookla – tries to answer the question whether the new X70 modem offers any tangible benefits in real life over the X65 in the Galaxy S22 series. Both lines are key players in the best Samsung phones roundup, so the speed with which they deliver on-the-go data to their owners is an important differentiator.

While the answer is that it depends on the type and strength of the 5G network, in the US the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra, are notably faster than their S22 counterparts in terms of 5G download speeds in the same conditions.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra, for one, clocked 189 Mbps download speeds, against the 177 Mbps result from its predecessor the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The middle child in the family – Galaxy S22+ – managed to score 166 Mbps, while the Galaxy S22+ mustered 167 Mbps median download speeds, so both were nearly equal.

The difference between the Galaxy S23 and S22 munchkins was the starkest, though. The newest 2023 model got 177 Mbps median download speeds, while the Galaxy S22 was able to deliver 145 Mbps only.

While the differences of the Galaxy S23 vs Galaxy S22 series 5G download speeds are not as drastic as to warrant an upgrade to the new phone, the newest X70 modem by Qualcomm is certainly playing its part.

Instead of upping the Gigabit download speeds as it did with the previous Snapdragon X65, X60, X55 and X50 generation, Qualcomm decided to stick with the 10 Gigabit rating of the modem that is currently in phones like the Galaxy S22 series, and instead focus on decking the new modem out with extra features and AI capabilities.
