The Boston Red Sox currently find themselves with a void at the shortstop position.

That is due to the fact that Xander Bogaerts is a free agent.

Red Sox fans everywhere are hoping and praying that the team retains their star shortstop and two-time World Series champion, but with shortstops being such a hot commodity, the Red Sox will certainly have some stiff competition.

On Twitter, one Red Sox fan made himself 100% clear on the situation, saying that it shouldn’t matter who the “heir apparent” at shortstop is for Boston, and that they should sign Bogaerts long time, moving him to DH when the time comes.

Fan Wants Red Sox To Keep Bogaerts

During the regular season, Bogaerts hit .307 with 15 home runs and 73 RBI.

The 30-year-old also tallied 53 extra-base hits, 38 doubles, and 254 total bases.

The Red Sox have also recently had to say goodbye to key players such as Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi in recent years.

Fans would certainly be disappointed if Bogaerts ends up signing elsewhere.

The slugger opted out of the remaining three years of his contract with the team, making him a free agent.

Keeping Bogaerts around would be a morale boost for the Sox as they attempt to bounce back from a 78-win season and last-place finish.

Still, the market for shortstops is competitive, and while the Red Sox have Trevor Story, who is familiar with the position, retaining Bogaerts is high on the team’s priority list.

If he walks, the Red Sox could then pivot to one of the other three shortstops, those being Dansby Swanson, Carlos Correa, and Trea Turner.
