San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is a hot commodity across the NFL these days, as many teams are interested in possibly hiring him as their next head coach.

His current team is about to play the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, but he has also been fielding requests for interviews with other teams.

The Houston Texans want to interview Ryans next week, but perhaps the Denver Broncos aren’t too interested in him.

Ryans became the 49ers’ defensive coordinator prior to last season, replacing the departed Robert Saleh, who is now the head coach of the New York Jets.

Prior to being promoted to defensive coordinator, Ryans had spent four years on head coach Kyle Shanahan’s staff, first as a defensive quality control coach and then as an inside linebackers coach.

San Francisco’s defense was already strong before Ryans became its defensive coordinator, but with him in that role, its defense has risen to new levels.

This season, it finished first in points allowed, total yards allowed and forced interceptions, and most consider its defense to be the best in the NFL.

Under Ryans’ tutelage, Nick Bosa has become arguably the best defensive end in the league, while second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga blossomed this year and was named to both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro first team.

The Broncos need to hire the right head coach after the disastrous season they just had, but they need more help on offense than on defense, as their offense was one of the worst many can remember seeing in years.
