The Chicago White Sox have found themselves in an awkward position.

Today, news broke that the newest addition to their starting rotation, Mike Clevinger, was being investigated by Major League Baseball for allegations of domestic violence.

The veteran right-hander signed a one-year, $12 million contract to join the White Sox early in the offseason.

The 32-year-old won seven games and posted a 4.33 ERA with the San Diego Padres in 2022.

Right-hander Johnny Cueto, who enjoyed a bounce-back campaign with the team, ultimately signed with the Miami Marlins.

On Twitter, Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirmed a report by Britt Ghiroli and Katie Strang of The Athletic.

This is bad news for the White Sox, who were banking a lot on a bounce-back season from Clevinger in 2023, so much so that they let Cueto walk.

That complicates things even further.

Clevinger’s former Cleveland Guardians teammate Trevor Bauer was recently under investigation for sexual assault and subsequently suspended.

Bauer has since been reinstated, with his suspension being reduced from 324 games to 194 games.

The Los Angeles Dodgers released him, and no team has made an attempt to sign him.

But after Cueto’s departure, the White Sox are in a precarious position with their starting rotation.

They were expecting to have Clevinger in the rotation for the 2023 season.

If he is ultimately suspended, or even placed on administrative leave, the White Sox may have to dive into the starting pitcher’s market soon.

Options such as Michael Wacha, Anibal Sanchez, and Mike Minor still have yet to be signed and could fit into the White Sox’s plans.
