Mets Insider Highlights The Current Rotation
The New York Mets are seeing how most of their starters want to test free agency.
It’s to be expected: players are supposed to look for the best possible contract for themselves and their families, and money is obviously a factor.
They should take advantage of every chance they get to increase their income, as any doctor, lawyer, fireman or accountant would do.
Jacob deGrom and Chris Bassitt opted out of their contracts/declined player options to enter the market, while the Mets opted against offering Taijuan Walker the qualifying offer worth $19.65 million.
That’s three members of the 2022 rotation that may not come back.
There could have been a fourth, but the Mets ended up picking up Carlos Carrasco‘s team option to retain him at least one more season.
The Mets Have Four Starters After Bringing Back Carrasco
“The Mets are picking up Carlos Carrasco’s $14 million club option, the team announced, bringing back some much-needed rotation depth. Their current top rotation options consist of Max Scherzer, Carrasco, David Peterson and Tylor Megill, and obviously they’ll be adding to that,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

An elite MLB team should have at least seven or eight quality rotation options and at least a couple additional depth alternatives.
As of Thursday right now, however, the Mets have four.
Yes, four: Scherzer, Carrasco, Peterson, and Megill, and the latter had a 5.13 ERA.
As DiComo states, the Mets need to add to that group, and while it’s likely that at least one of their own free agents returns, they should also be looking at the rest of the free agent (and trade) market to complete the group.
It will be a challenge for general manager Billy Eppler.
