There were some high hopes for the Los Angeles Lakers this year but things have not panned out as expected.

Injuries, especially the latest to Anthony Davis, have dashed their chances of greatness.

But even before they lost Davis, the Lakers were not playing like a championship team.

Despite some off games and a few mistakes and missed chances, LeBron James has been reliably great in 2022-23, even at the ripe age of 38 years old.

Not only has he repeatedly been the best player on his team, but he is also getting close to breaking a major NBA record.

James is now just 484 points away from passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most points in NBA history.

Based on how he’s been playing so far this year, James could break that record in about 17 games.

That means that around the beginning of February, probably against the New Orleans Pelicans or Oklahoma City Thunder, James will become the player with the most points in the history of the league.

Fans are hoping that he achieves this on February 7, when the Lakers take on the Thunder.

That’s because that game will be at home at Crypto.com Arena, the first match after a five-game road trip.

James will receive a huge standing ovation no matter where he is when he finally beats Abdul-Jabbar but if he does it in Los Angeles, the place is going to go absolutely wild.

The praise and the think pieces and the countless headlines will be well-earned: no matter what you think about James, no one can deny that this is going to be a major milestone and important moment for NBA.

Yes, his team might be lacking but James is getting ever closer to becoming more crucial to the history of the league.
