Jimmy Garoppolo Now Stands Alone In Active History

On Wednesday, Tom Brady announced his retirement, and he will go down as the greatest quarterback and player in NFL history with his seven Super Bowl championships.

That leaves only one active player with more than one Super Bowl ring, and it’s a name some fans may not have expected: the San Francisco 49ers‘ Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo broke into the NFL as a second-round draft choice of the New England Patriots, which allowed him to learn from Brady himself.

Although he got virtually no playing time as a member of the Patriots, he did get two world championship rings in 2014 and 2016, and in the regular season, he did see some action.

Most notably, he filled in for Brady in 2016 when the legend was suspended for his involvement in the Deflategate scandal, and it made him a hot prospect around the league.

Head coach and executive Bill Belichick was forced to choose between Brady and Garoppolo, and he decided to trade Garoppolo to the 49ers midway through the 2017 campaign.

That trade greatly shortened what could’ve been a long rebuilding process for the 49ers, as they reached the Super Bowl in the 2019 season.

However, it looks like Garoppolo’s tenure in San Francisco is over, as the team is expected to go with rookie Brock Purdy under center moving forward.

After Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 13, Purdy, the last player taken in last year’s draft, played admirably and showed off some skills Garoppolo doesn’t have in his toolkit.

Expect several teams to pursue him in free agency this offseason, including the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Jets.
