Southern Louisiana didn’t exist just a few thousand years ago. The end of the last ice age around five thousand years ago sent water and sediment flowing down the center of the continent to become the Mississippi River. The river wound and twisted depositing sediment which piled up a shallow shelf to form the area we know today. Animation by Walter Williams
