0

Terence Nance is a filmmaker arguably best known for his short films and his HBO sketch comedy series Random Acts of Flyness. Today, he’s announced his debut album under the name Terence Etc. Vortex is out August 19 via Brainfeeder. Listen to the lead single “In Contemplation of Clair’s Scent” below.

Vortex is a sonic tool that I made so that I can play it for myself and balance my energy between masculine and feminine; creative and destructive; domination and submission; right and left; sun and moon; day and night: opposing energies generally,” Nance said in a statement. “The album intends to use sound, melody, song, incantation, etc. to rebalance the self and each other throughout the constant circular movement of life.”

Vortex includes Terence Etc.’s 2018 song “Infinince or Infinity?,” which he produced with Solomon Dorsey and Nick Hakim; the track also features harpist Brandee Younger, drummer Adam Jackson, and others. Additional Vortex contributors include Serpentwithfeet, Nelson Bandela, keyboardist Nick Semrad, and guitarist Raja Kassis.

In addition to his work with Earl Sweatshirt, Nance collaborated with Solange on the companion film to her album When I Get Home. Revisit the 2019 interview “Random Acts of Flyness Creator Terence Nance on Contributing to Solange’s When I Get Home Film” on the Pitch.
